Martin Akerwall
 

Danish-Swedish conductor and composer Martin Akerwall studied percussion, piano, composition at the Royal Danish Academy of Music and Mozarteum Hochschule for Music. As a composer he enjoyed  the support of Boulez, Shchedrin and Gorecki before becoming part of the Finnish conductor's tradition of Esa-Pekka Salonen, Leif Segerstam and Sakari Oramo while taken his Diploma with legendary Maestro Jorma Panula 1988 - 1991 at the Sibelius Academy, Helsinki.

A remarkable debut with Tivoli Symphony Orchestra, Copenhagen gained Martin Akerwall a positive and firm reputation as one of Denmark's most promising talents. Furthermore, he was awarded with several distinguished Danish prizes and became assistant conductor for Dimitri Kitajenko, Gian-Carlo Andretta, Martinez Gomez and Michael Schønwandt.

Since then Akerwall has regularly worked with Scandinavian symphony orchestras and appeared in concerts with orchestras in Denmark, Sweden, Finland, USA, France, Latvia, Singapore, Czechoslovakia, Germany and Switzerland.

Akerwall was Principal Conductor and studienleiter at Halberstadt Theater in Germany before he enjoyed positions as conductor at prominent theaters, such as Bern State Opera in Switzerland, The Royal Danish Theater and The Finnish Opera. He has been Chief Conductor of the Danish Royal Life Guards Band, North See Land Symphony Orchestra, Amadeus Ensemble and MIVU Symphony Orchestra.

Akerwall has a keen interest in - and talent for coaching and teaching. He has worked with several youth orchestras in Europe and Asia. While beeing Artistic Director of the Tivoli Boys Guard he rebuilt and refined its culture and brought the Guard to a remarkable high artistic level.

In recent years, Akerwall has been renowned as a sought-after teacher for conductors all over the world. He has given masterclasses in USA, Finland, Latvia, Bulgaria and in Denmark. Since 2015 he has been Artistic Director for Orchestral Conductors Academy.

As a composer Akerwall has composed several stage-works on commission for the Royal Danish Theater. Other commissioned works counts a piano concerto and numerous works solo and chamber ensembles. His music has been performed at festivals, concerts and broadcasts in both Scandinavia, USA, England, France and Singapore.

Akerwall is an impassioned pianist. Since young at age he has regularly performed as soloist or chamber musician. He has also performed as soloist or member of orchestras such as DR Symphony Orchestra and Danish Royal Orchestra.

In his free time Martin Akerwall enjoys kayaking and he is an avid practitioner of yoga and meditation.
