Teachers and students are
demanding more variety in the music for ballet
class. The original compositions and familiar
songs on this album respond to this demand and
are also examples of the wide range of music
that can be used in the teaching of ballet.
David Howard and Steven Mitchell first worked
together at the Boston Ballet when David was a
guest teacher at the conservatory and Steven was
the principle pianist. This recording is a
result of that enjoyable experience and is their
contribution to Ballet of Today. This double
record set contains thirty original and familiar
solo piano melodies for an intermediate ballet
class. All the music begins with a four count
introduction. At the Barre, each selection ends
with a long balance and in the center the
selections are extra long to allow for several
groups of dancers. All the bands are repeated.

Visual Notes to "Ballet Of Today" This DVD accompanies the
album (CD sold separately), "David Howard &
Steven Mitchell - Music For Ballet Class" and
contains a complete ballet class for
intermediate level training. David Howard
instructs two dancers from the David Howard
Dance Center by clearly showing each combination
of steps before the music starts and offering
suggestions after the exercise is over. The
dancers demonstrate the exercises in both
directions at the Barre and all the combinations
in the Center. Steven Mitchell has created
arrangements of twenty five melodies to be used
in the ballet class. The standard four count
introduction is combined with easy to follow
rhythms and uplifting melodies. Many of the
selections on the album are contained on this
visual demonstration with some of the longer
melodies for Center work fading out after the
exercise has been performed several times. This DVD is a non-chaptered video
stream in a clear unmarked case which shows the
label of the disc. What's this?
