It has been said the greatest
legacy of Rebekah Harkness, the famous patron of
Dance, is the way her dancers were trained. The
renowned teacher David Howard was Director of the
Harkness Ballet School on the East Side of Manhattan
during the mid-seventies and the accomplished
pianist, John Childs was a member of the staff. They
forged a unique professional relationship amidst the
exciting and creative environment of this legendary
school founded by Rebekah Harkness. Craig Unger in
Blue Blood, his biography of Rebekah Harkness, talks
in terms of The Harkness School of Ballet at
Harkness House being a serious force in the New York
Dance world and that an opportunity to study there
was coveted by young dancers. “One reason was that
David Howard, a highly regarded dance teacher, was
its director. He was so well thought of that even
after the folding of Rebekah’s last troupe, some of
the best dancers in the world (among them Gelsey
Kirkland, Natalia Makarova, and
Peter Martins) took his classes.” David and John
remember those times in this excellent collection of
music for Ballet Class, including one composition by
Rebekah Harkness, and pay tribute to those amazing
years. DVD also available. This
DVD is a non-chaptered video stream in a clear
unmarked case which shows the label of the disc.
